The Fashion & Art Research Institute (FARI) was founded in April 2003 in New York City, USA. Its predecessor was The Universal Fashion Chamber Inc. In August 2014, it was officially renamed the Fashion & Art Research Institute, with strong support from the Sino-American Fashion Committee and The Oriental Renaissance Alliance. It is a research and consulting institution for the fashion and art industries, positioned in metropolitan New York and serving the globe.
It was founded by the renowned Chinese-American social activist, fashion industry educator, visual artist, and fashion designer, John Xu, who also serves as its president. It is primarily composed of Chinese-American experts, scholars, and industry elites from the fashion and art circles, serving as an international platform for resource integration and exchange. It is dedicated to building the Chinese fashion and cultural industry chain and contributing to the development of Chinese fashion and culture.
The institute will cooperate with the Sino-American Fashion Committee (SAFC) and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to regularly hold exhibitions and exchange activities related to fashion and art. Meanwhile, to better address the issues of talent development and educational linkage in the industry, FARI will organize short-term lectures, seminars, and study & internship camps in the U.S. for recent graduates in applied arts from China. Commissioned by the Sino-American Fashion Committee and The Oriental Renaissance Alliance, it will provide consulting services for the industrial upgrading of education, fashion, and art between China and the U.S.
Supported by the Snowbird Group USA, the institute was directly involved in establishing several Sino-US cooperative ventures, including Zhejiang Sci-Tech University/Zhejiang International Fashion & Technology College (ZIFT), Zhejiang University Graduate School/International Fashion Materials Engineering Graduate Program, Wenzhou University/College of Fashion/International Fashion & Technology College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University/International Jewelry & Fashion Research Development Center (SFDC). It also collaborated with Shanghai Textile Holdings Group to create China's first fashion enterprise, the Shanghai Fashion Center, and with China Henderson Land Development to establish the "Beijing Fashion Center," among other Sino-US fashion industry cooperation projects, making outstanding contributions to the development of China's fashion industry.
Currently, the institute has committees for Fashion Design, Culture & Collection, Art & Photography, Health & Wellness, and Tourism & Leisure, bringing together a group of internationally renowned experts and scholars. Many are leading figures in their respective fields who have won numerous international awards and made outstanding contributions to the worlds of fashion, art, wellness, and creativity. FARIUS will provide a platform for everyone to exchange knowledge, experience, and achievements.
Simultaneously, to create an "Oriental Elite Lifestyle," we will actively work with the American Oriental Renaissance Elite Club and the American Snowbird International Lifestyle Pavilion. We have established the "Laozi International Health & Wellness Center" to discover and integrate outstanding lifestyle elements and health resources from both the East and the West. Combined with contemporary fashion, we aim to create a new Oriental-style lifestyle, and have established the Oriental Renaissance Elite Club network internationally.
The institute has been invited to host numerous important cultural and art exchange activities between China and the U.S., including: two sessions of the New York Asian Art Festival's Joint Exhibition of Famous Chinese and American Artists (2014-2015); the New York Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Joint Exhibition, the Retrospective Exhibition of Chinese Photographers in the U.S., and the Exhibition of Chinese Lost Treasures held in the metropolitan New York cultural and fashion satellite city in 2012. Two major events in Shanghai and Beijing, China: The Oriental Renaissance / Welcoming a New Climax of Chinese Cultural Revival (2015, Shanghai Changfeng No.1 Art Business Club), the Chinese Cultural Renaissance and Belt and Road Summit Forum (2017, Capital Hotel Beijing), and the Shanghai Chinese Cultural Revival Summit Forum (2018, Shanghai Lingang New City, AmCham Shanghai). Commemorative events for the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity (2019, UN Headquarters in New York & Yabo Gallery), the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity Commemorative Conference & International Summit Forum on Taoist Culture (May 21, 2019, UN Headquarters in New York, Secaucus Public Library and Business Resource Center, NJ), the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity Commemorative Conference and "Human Health 3.0" & "Metropolis of Fashion, Light of the Chinese" (May 21, 2025, UN Headquarters, One Central Park Club House Manhattan), and the Chinese Taoist I-Ching Lecture (2025 - Queens Public Library, New York). In collaboration with The Oriental Renaissance Alliance, branches of the Oriental Elite Club have been established in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Tokyo, Hamburg, Spain, and Milan, actively supporting the "Human Health 3.0" and "Metropolis of Fashion, Light of the Chinese" initiatives promoted by the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity Organizing Committee and The Oriental Renaissance Alliance. The release of the "Human Health 3.0 Declaration" at the conference had a significant impact on society.
Furthermore, to better showcase the talents of our artists, we established the Hudson Art Studio in 2020 with the support of The Oriental Renaissance Alliance (ORA) and the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). It supports artists in their creation and promotion through various artistic expressions such as painting, photography, 3D animation, sculpture, fashion, and film. Influenced by the Hudson River School of art, it has achieved remarkable results in recent years, attracting a group of outstanding artists and works.
Adhering to the principle of art and fashion serving the public, our institute will work together with everyone to innovate fashion, promote Human Health 3.0, and share a beautiful life.
